Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) of a Fender Mold for the Motorcycle Industry Master Cut EDM, which has been offering quality wire EDM electrical discharge machining services since 2000, is an EDM specialist with a focus on projects that require precise machining and fine finishes in addition to our CNC small-hole EDM capabilities.
A motorcycle industry client asked Master Cut EDM to wire EDM a fender mold that would be used to form plastic, inner fenders. The P20 alloy steel, which was developed to meet the requirements of the machined cavities and forces used in zinc die casting and plastic molding, offers good machinability, deep hardening, and uniform mechanical properties. In most cases, the use of P20 alloy means the finished part won't require additional heat treatments. Master Cut EDM used wire electrical discharge machining on multiple pockets in a single setup to ensure the utmost accuracy on its Makino U86 wire EDM. We met tight tolerances of +/-.0005 and performed the required in-process inspections and tests. We manufactured three of the 1500 pound fender molds, one daily, for shipment to the client.
